Welcome to the San Rafael Rock Quarry

Thank you for visiting us. We encourage you to visit this site regularly as we will be constantly updating the news section. The purpose of this website is to provide an accurate background and educational resource for the community regarding the San Rafael Rock Quarry.

The San Rafael Rock Quarry has been operating for over 100 years. We are a state-designated resource and the only waterfront operation in Northern California that can transport materials via barge to specific project destinations. The Dutra Group purchased the Quarry in 1986, and since then we have contributed materials to countless local public works and private development projects. Located in the county of Marin just outside the city limits of San Rafael, the Quarry supplies materials and resources to an extensive list of clients and projects throughout the region. Building materials from the San Rafael Rock Quarry have a role in approximately 90 percent of Marin County projects.

Our goal is to continue to distribute materials to local companies and provide essential materials for emergency relief and disaster prevention.

We hope the information we provide will help you to understand our mission and commitment to the community, and that you will support our continued operations and objectives. If you would like to learn more about the Northern California dredging industry and the Dutra family's involvement in reclaiming the California Delta, please visit the Dutra Museum

Oct 2011SRRQ Community Forum was a Huge Success!

On Saturday, October 22nd, the San Rafael Rock Quarry hosted a community meeting which provided our neighbors and interested local residents with an update on our recent operations.

Over 100 people attended the meeting where they listened to Quarry representatives give a detailed overview on our operational modifications and Quarry enhancements. Among the participants were the Pt. San Pedro Road Coalition and Supervisor Susan Adams, who supported us in coordinating this highly successful, informational event. Our team also answered questions from the audience and conducted guided Quarry tours to interested residents.

In a ceremonial ribbon cutting, we also unveiled the latest addition to the Quarry fleet - our brand new, 2012 Waterless Elgin Eagle Street Sweeper, which will soon be sweeping the San Pedro Corridor.

It was truly a great day to share with our community and to demonstrate the value that the Quarry has for Marin County residents.

We are very eager to host more of these meetings in the future and we're excited about this new era of communication and collaboration with our neighbors.

Oct 2011SRRQ Permit Update

As we continue to fulfill the requirements of our operating permit, The San Rafael Rock Quarry now insists that all trucks leaving the Quarry loaded with aggregate or asphalt materials be covered by tarp or other means to reduce the potential for dust. Our permit provides instructions that we must abide by the California Vehicle Code, which has detailed rules and regulations.

Please note: According to Section 23114 of the Vehicle Code, “aggregate material” means rock fragments, pebbles, sand, dirt, gravel, cobbles, crushed base, asphalt & other similar materials, which does not pertain to loads containing riprap material.

The Beavers is the leading and most prominent organization within the heavy engineering construction industry.

Each year, The Beavers pays tribute to those individuals who stand out and make significant achievements in the engineering construction business. The Management Award was awarded to Bill Dutra for his leadership in building The Dutra Group into the West Coast leader in aggregates, dredging and marine construction services.

“I am very grateful to accept this award from a group of people that I both respect and admire”, stated Bill Dutra. “It’s truly an honor to be recognized by your peers and I share this accolade with all the valued employees at The Dutra Group who made it possible.”
